Course Overview
This qualification pathway is designed to provide an understanding of how schools operate and the roles and responsibilities of school staff. It helps learners develop the knowledge and confidence needed to begin supporting children and young people in an educational setting. You will gain knowledge of safeguarding, health and safety, child development, communication, equality and diversity, and the importance of working effectively as part of a school team. These qualifications are an excellent first step towards a career in education and school support.

You will need to have Level 1 English. This course will require a pre-enrolment interview. Please ring 0161 770 8268 to book an appointment.

You will be required to complete assignments which will be reviewed by your tutor to ensure all performance criteria have been achieved. There are no exams, certification is gained through completion of assignments to the required standard.

The pathway consists of two qualifications delivered across the academic year. First, you will complete the Level 1 Award Preparing to work in schools, followed by the Level 1 Award in Safeguarding in a Learning Environment.

Completing this qualification is a significant achievement and provides opportunities to progress to further learning. You may choose to study a higher-level qualification within the education sector or undertake courses designed to develop essential skills for everyday life and employment, such as English, Mathematics and Employability Skills. Your tutor or careers adviser will work with you to identify the most appropriate progression route and help you explore the range of learning and employment opportunities available.

Open General Fee Information

This course may be eligible for a range of fee concessions, which could result in it being free of charge for some learners. A free course offer is also available for employed learners who meet specific eligibility criteria. Where course fees exceed £70, learners may have the option to pay by instalments. Further information is available at www.oldham.gov.uk/lifelong. Learners should be aware that refunds are not available if they withdraw from a course. Any outstanding instalment payments will remain payable following withdrawal.
