This qualification develops the basic skills needed to care for a baby or young child. It is also suitable for anyone who wants to develop parenting and life skills.

You will need to have Entry Level 3 English Skills to meet the demands of the course. This course requires a pre-enrolment interview. Please ring 0161-770-8268 to arrange an appointment.

There are no exams, certification is gained through participation in class and completion of assignments to the required standard.

The course consists of 3 mandatory units:
Unit 1 – Confidence building for the young child through play.
Unit 2 – Listening to and talking with a young child.
Unit 3 – Providing a safe and hygienic environment for a young child.

Completing this qualification is a significant achievement and provides opportunities to progress to further learning. You may choose to study a higher-level qualification within the Education and Childcare sector or undertake courses designed to develop essential skills for everyday life and employment, such as English, Mathematics and Employability Skills. Your tutor or careers adviser will work with you to identify the most appropriate progression route and help you explore the range of learning opportunities available across Oldham.

This course specifically supports progression towards the following careers:

• Nursery Assistant (after gaining further qualifications)
• Early Years Practitioner (with higher-level qualifications)
• Teaching Assistant (with additional qualifications and experience)
• Childminding support roles
• Playgroup or after-school club support roles
• Voluntary work with children and families.

This course may be eligible for a range of fee concessions, which could result in it being free of charge for some learners. A free course offer is also available for employed learners who meet specific eligibility criteria. Where course fees exceed £70, learners may have the option to pay by instalments. Further information is available at www.oldham.gov.uk/lifelong. Learners should be aware that refunds are not available if they withdraw from a course. Any outstanding instalment payments will remain payable following withdrawal.
