Course Overview

This qualification is suitable for learners who are interested in working within a school or college environment. It provides an introduction to the knowledge and understanding required for a range of support roles. You will learn how to support teachers and help children and young people to achieve their full potential. You will develop an understanding of child and young person development, safeguarding, supporting positive behaviour, promoting equality and inclusion, and working effectively as part of a school team. This qualification is ideal for those considering a career in education, returning to learning, or wishing to progress to further study in Supporting Teaching and Learning. Along with your coursework you will also be assessed in the school/college where you are working or volunteering. The taught sessions are delivered online on a Wednesday evening.

Open Requirements

Applicants are required to attend a pre-enrolment interview. You must hold a Level 2 qualification in English (GCSE or equivalent). A minimum of a Level 1 qualification in Maths is recommended. You will also need to be employed or volunteering in a school setting for at least 10 hours per week throughout the duration of the course.

Open Assessment

You will be required to complete assignments online using Moodle. These assignments will be reviewed by your tutor to ensure that all performance criteria have been met. There are no examinations. Certification is achieved through the successful completion of assignments to the required standard. Work-based assessments will also be carried out through direct observation of your practice in your workplace or volunteer setting.

• Unit 7 - Support positive behaviour in a learning environment for children and young people
• Unit 8 - Contribute to teamwork in a learning environment.
• Unit 9 - Understand children and young people’s play and leisure.
• Unit 10 - Promote an effective learning environment.
• Unit 11 - Provide displays in a learning environment.

Open Progression

Completing this qualification is a significant achievement and provides opportunities to progress to further learning. You may choose to study a higher-level qualification within the Education and Childcare sector or undertake courses designed to develop essential skills for everyday life and employment, such as English, Mathematics and Employability Skills. Your tutor or careers adviser will work with you to identify the most appropriate progression route and help you explore the range of learning and employment opportunities available.

Open General Fee Information

This course may be eligible for a range of fee concessions, which could result in it being free of charge for some learners. A free course offer is also available for employed learners who meet specific eligibility criteria. Where course fees exceed £70, learners may have the option to pay by instalments. Further information is available at www.oldham.gov.uk/lifelong. Learners should be aware that refunds are not available if they withdraw from a course. Any outstanding instalment payments will remain payable following withdrawal.
